What each one actually is
James Hardie is fiber cement: portland cement, sand and cellulose fiber, pressed and cured into planks. It is essentially a thin cement board with wood fiber for tensile strength.
LP SmartSide is engineered wood: wood strands and fibers bound with resin, treated with a zinc borate compound through the whole thickness, and finished with a resin-saturated overlay.
One is a masonry product. One is a wood product engineered to behave better than wood.
Fire is the clearest difference
Fiber cement is non-combustible. Engineered wood is not, though it carries a flame-spread rating and treated products perform far better than untreated wood.
For most Clark County homes this is a preference. It becomes a decision where it matters: properties in the wildland-urban interface, the rural acreage around Amboy and Yacolt, homes with tight lot-line setbacks, and anywhere an insurer or jurisdiction is asking questions about exterior fire performance.
If wildfire exposure is on your mind at all, Hardie answers it and SmartSide does not, and that alone can settle the choice.
Impact resistance runs the other way
This is where engineered wood clearly wins. Fiber cement is brittle. It chips at the edges, cracks if struck hard, and can be damaged by a thrown rock from a mower, a ladder set carelessly, or hail.
SmartSide takes impact far better because it is a wood-based composite with some give. Houses with kids, sports, gravel drives or open ground near the walls see the difference over time.
Weight and what it does to installation
Fiber cement is heavy. That has consequences beyond the crew’s back: it needs more fasteners, benefits from two people on longer planks, and cutting it produces crystalline silica dust that requires proper dust control and respiratory protection. Correct silica handling on a Hardie job is a real occupational safety requirement, not an optional nicety, and it is one of the things that separates a professional siding crew from a cheap one.
SmartSide is significantly lighter, cuts with standard woodworking tools, and installs faster. On a large re-side that labor difference is real money.
That is why the two frequently end up on the same property rather than competing. Hardie goes on the house and SmartSide on the shop, which is how most Battle Ground siding jobs on rural acreage get specified. The same logic applies to the long uninterrupted wall planes of a Gresham ranch or split-level, where most of the elevation is exactly the kind of area SmartSide covers quickly.
Moisture behavior in a wet climate
Both perform well in the Pacific Northwest when installed correctly, and both fail in the same place when they are not: the cut ends and the ground clearance.
Fiber cement does not rot, but it does absorb water, and unprimed cut edges will wick. Manufacturer instructions call for sealing field cuts and maintaining clearance above grade, roofs and decks.
Engineered wood’s protection is its treatment and its overlay. Field cuts expose the untreated core, so cut-end sealing is not optional maintenance advice - it is a condition of the warranty and of the product working.
In practice this means the same thing for both: on a wet-climate re-side, the installer’s discipline about cut ends, clearances and flashing matters more than the product choice.
Appearance and finish
Both come pre-finished or primed, and both offer lap, panel and shingle profiles in comparable textures.
Fiber cement holds a factory finish exceptionally well and has a crisp, flat face. Engineered wood has a slightly deeper embossed grain that some people prefer as more convincingly wood-like and others find too pronounced.
Prefinished is worth the premium in this climate for a practical reason: a factory-applied finish is applied and cured in controlled conditions, where a field-applied finish in western Washington is at the mercy of the weather window.
Warranty
Both carry long warranties with meaningful conditions attached, and in both cases the conditions are about installation: fastener type and spacing, clearances, cut-end treatment, and flashing.
The important question for either product is whether your installer is credentialed and installs to the manufacturer’s published instructions. Quality Master is a James Hardie certified installer, which is what allows Hardie work to be warranted as intended.
How we would decide
Choose James Hardie if: fire performance matters for your property, you want the most dimensionally stable option, you like the crisp flat profile, or you plan to stay a long time and want the lowest-maintenance exterior available.
Choose LP SmartSide if: impact resistance matters, the house is large and labor cost is a real factor, you want a warmer wood-grain look, or the structure benefits from a lighter cladding.
Both are substantial upgrades over vinyl and both will outlast the paint on whatever is there now.
